Malaysian director Zinc Chew (趙慈瑩) presents a screening of her work at OCAC. Sotong dives into the pulse of Malaysia’s underground drag culture: the protagonist, Juan, a drag queen who was arrested during a police raid at a Halloween party in Kuala Lumpur in 2022. Two years later, he and his peers continue to perform in the cracks of the underground scene, using humor and glamour to confront social prejudice, living out their own beauty, joy, and pain through their performances. The post-screening talk will be opened by the director and our organization to discuss the evolution and context of drag culture in both Taiwan and Malaysia, and to further explore what it reflects about the cultural and ethnic landscapes of both places.
