“Where do we meet?” — manman at the Terap Festival, Bandung

In August, OCAC (Open Contemporary Art Center) and P.M.S. member manman was invited to Bandung, Indonesia, to participate in the second edition of the Terap Festival—a public-space theatre festival dedicated to exploring, interpreting, and transforming the city through performative art. This year’s festival, themed “Cities on Our Street: The Right to Mobility & the Right to the City” (Kota di Jalan Kita: Hak Mobilitas & Hak atas Kota), invited Ferial Afiff and Trianzani Sulshi as curators, presenting the curatorial concept “Caang Mumbul Dina Batok”, adapted from a Sundanese proverb. Literally, it means “brightly shining, soaring in the shell,” mostly referring to a coconut shell. The concept symbolizes a city becoming increasingly modern, shiny, and proud of its development, while also cautioning that people living inside the “bubble” of urban growth may be suffering or marginalized amidst this progress.

The festival’s format not only invited artists to participate, but also included open calls and extended invitations to two artists from the previous edition. In this sharing, manman will offer a first-hand perspective on her experience: how she engaged with the curatorial theme within a limited timeframe, how her work gradually took shape in a cross-cultural context, and her relevant reflections. She will also highlight works by fellow participating artists, many of whom collaborated closely with local communities in Bandung.
