*The event will be conducted in English, with interpretation provided as needed. Text|Vu Duc Toan & Phung Tien Son A group of artists gathered at No. 25, formerly the Dong Sheng Shop (東生商店) on Ganzhou Street. Their actions were unclear, or perhaps they were just passing the time while waiting. The Dong Sheng Shop had been located on this street for a century. Originally a grocery store, it was taken over in the winter of 1989 by a family who had immigrated from Mainland China. They retained many aspects of the shop but also made significant changes. The row of papaya trees surrounding the shop was almost completely cut down, and over time, the variety of products available gradually diminished. Within a year, the Dong Sheng Shop only sold two main items: sunflower seeds and rubber bands. In the attic of the shop, the sound of a young girl practicing the piano echoed late into the night, accompanied occasionally by the stern voice of her father. Meanwhile, the neighborhood children would gather below the shop, as was customary, to listen to the music. The wife, though not conventionally beautiful, was like a fairy to the children. Whenever she opened her hand, there would always be free candy and sunflower seeds. The children sometimes ran away in fear when they saw her husband, with his imposing figure, coming down from the attic. — This event is part of the 2025 “Meander Maps.” Developed during Vietnamese artist Nguyen Quoc Thanh’s residency in Taiwan, it continues the creative exchanges and collaborative journeys between Taiwan and Vietnam. In this event, the two artists will first engage in a conversation, sharing their experiences as members of Nha San Collective. Afterwards, Toan will perform with performance artists from Taiwan. —— ▸ Meander Maps Since 2023, Open-Contemporary Art Center has collaborated with Hanoi-based art groups Nhà Sàn Collective, Á Space, and ba-bau AIR on the “Meander Maps” project. This project centers on artists’ field research as the main form of exchange, drawing inspiration from the winding Red River as it traverses the ridges and plains of northern Vietnam. Artists wander through the Red River, shaped by the river’s curves, and conduct fieldwork that explores the region’s human geography, natural environment, and socio-political context. Through their personal journeys, they create a collective archive. ▸ Vu Duc Toan Vu Duc Toan works primarily with performance and installation. From 2005 to present, Toan has been an editor at the Vietnam Fine Arts Association, working at magazines under the Association. In recent years, her work has increasingly focused on personal life questions and introspection. She has been invited to participate in performance art events across Taiwan, as well as in Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong, Macau, Beijing, Shenzhen, Xi’an, and Qingdao.
