For English, please scroll down

*We’d like to ask you to bring anything that you think can be boiled in water. we’d use it for the performance. Text| Nguyen Quoc Thanh & Phan Dong Thai Up, down, front to back then reversely, back to front. I moved my left shoulder in a circle as if it was an exercise. A big, heavy cicada flew from one light bulb to another, making a lot of noise. As I listened, I also tried to locate the tightness in my left shoulder as it seemed to disappear. In the garden behind my back, sprawling vegetables submerged in dry, hot, night air. My left shoulder has sagged down a little. That’s why the pain. What can be the reason that now it is gone? Would be nice if it doesn’t come back. The sikawasay started speaking in both English and Mandarin about spirits, wifi, rice wine, ancestors, about connection with the invisible world. The right shoulder is where your guardians sit. On the left shoulder, your ego. Someone brought another pack of beer.
- sikawasay refers to a spiritual healer in Fata’an community of the Amis people
Text|manman
While I was on the phone with Thanh, discussing the performance, I was on my way somewhere— amid the traffic and the chaos, I often couldn’t tell left from right.
As we spoke, I imagined boiling water: when water evaporates, does the steam wrinkle clothes or smooth them out? As we spoke, I imagined a cold mountain stream: its clear current slips through my fingers, then mends itself—my mind feels clear again.
Over there, someone stood with their shoulders slightly hunched. The shift in that curve seemed to speak of the weight of life: is it ease? is it tension?
One muscle pulls another: up… down… left… right… a search for balance between work and life? If I stay focused, maybe I can manage it too.
Shoulders that carry the material and the spiritual, shoulders that let go of the spiritual and the material— as time flows on.
This event is part of the 2025 “Meander Maps.” Developed during Vietnamese artist Nguyen Quoc Thanh’s residency in Taiwan, it continues the creative exchanges and collaborative journeys between Taiwan and Vietnam. We warmly welcome you to join us and be a part of this ongoing exchange.
— Meander Maps Since 2023, Open-Contemporary Art Center has collaborated with Hanoi-based art groups Nhà Sàn Collective, Á Space, and ba-bau AIR on the “Meander Maps” project. This project centers on artists’ field research as the main form of exchange, drawing inspiration from the winding Red River as it traverses the ridges and plains of northern Vietnam. Artists wander through the Red River, shaped by the river’s curves, and conduct fieldwork that explores the region’s human geography, natural environment, and socio-political context. Through their personal journeys, they create a collective archive.
Nguyen Quoc Thanh Nguyễn Quốc Thành works as an artist and curator. He is co-founding member of Nhà Sàn Collective and its curator board member. In 2013, he founded Queer Forever! festival which has become an on-going project, a pop-up cinema, book and zine workshop, kitchen, space of queer gathering, listening, watching, and loving. In 2022, his collaborated project titled ưhưh22, a queer house offering free accommodation was part of Nhà Sàn Collective’s works for documentafifteen in Kassel, Germany. The idea of a nomad queer house has been continuing in Hanoi, in the forms of reading sessions, kitchen, weaving and sewing workshops.
Phan Dong Thai has been doing performances with Thanh as a duo for several years.
manman manman is an artist and a member of both “P.M.S.” and OCAC (Open Contemporary Art Center). Moving between individual and collective practices, she often works with performance as a primary mode—particularly around themes of labor and gender—using bodily gestures to disrupt the inertia of everyday life. Her practice also frequently incorporates “food” and “objects” as entry points into alternative forms of writing.
PEPE(they/them) PEPE (they/them) is an interdisciplinary artist exploring themes of gender and intimacy. Their practice spans visual art, performance, body and movement based work. Since 2023, they’ve led workshops with various organizations, using sensory experience and the body to explore boundaries, public space, and memory as layered metaphors for the land.
