他們同時還運營著 Hoa Quỳnh Cinema(一個起自 2021 年的親密、即興的放映與製作計畫)。 Website:https://www.ba-bau.org/

— Since 2023, P.M.S. and the Hanoi-based art collective ba-bau AIR have been exploring betel nut culture between Taiwan and Vietnam. This collaboration originates from the similar myths surrounding betel nut culture in both regions. They imagine its spread across land and sea, carried by human migration to distant lands where it eventually took root —— In Taiwan, betel nut is linked to industrial society, the working class, and the gender economy, while in Indigenous cultures, it facilitates communication between humans and spirits. In Vietnam, betel nut is central to wedding and funeral rituals and was historically used for teeth blackening and oral hygiene. In March, as part of the Meander Maps project, P.M.S. traveled to Hanoi for a residency at ba-bau AIR, where they began their field research. In September, ba-bau AIR members Dinh Thao Linh and Kieu Anh Nguyen came to Taipei to continue the research while visiting cities across Taiwan, drawing from their individual creative practices. This weekend, P.M.S. will engage with participants to discuss the betel nut research conducted in Vietnam and Taiwan, sharing the various intersecting value systems hidden beneath its cultural surface. ba-bau AIR, during their residency in Taiwan, will host the “ba-bau Pop-Up Salon” and, in the following session, share their current creative processes and practices, along with the outcomes from the pop-up services.

— About Meander Maps Since 2023, Open-Contemporary Art Center has collaborated with Hanoi-based art groups Nhà Sàn Collective, Á Space, and ba-bau AIR on the “Meander Maps” project. This project centers on artists’ field research as the main form of exchange, drawing inspiration from the winding Red River as it traverses the ridges and plains of northern Vietnam. Artists wander through the Red River, shaped by the river’s curves, and conduct fieldwork that explores the region’s human geography, natural environment, and socio-political context. Through their personal journeys, they create a collective archive. — P.M.S. “P.M.S.” is derived from the first syllables of the their names: Posak Jodian, manman, and Sophie Chen. The acronym also stands for “Premenstrual Syndrome” in English, reflecting their frustration with the formation of mainstream historical narratives. Humorously, they also interpret it as “Probably Meaning Something,” reflecting their open and respectful approach to questioning societal frameworks. Since 2023, they’ve combined their thoughts and actions into a collective practice, focusing on the intersection of Indigenous and gender issues. They’ve curated screenings in Taiwan, Indonesia, Vietnam, and Japan. At the same time, they’ve turned betel nut into a symbol, rallying sisters across the world—building connections and exploring alternative narratives, one chew at a time. — ba-bau AIR Founded in 2019, ba-bau AIR is an alternative space: a kitchen, a studio, an artist-in-residence and whatever it could be in Hanoi. ba-bau is a collective (2021) with curators, producers, and artists. Their practices focus on designing safe spaces, curation & producing exhibitions, designing programs, emerging interdisciplinary collaborations & community-based work. They are running ba-bau AIR - a flexible space (artist-in-residence, kitchen, studio) in Hanoi (2019-) and Hoa Quỳnh Cinema (an intimate, impromptu screening project & production since 2021). ba-bau’s works have appeared/exhibited at daad galerie (Berlin, 2024), Ngọc Thuỵ wet market, Hà Nội (2023-2024), VIVA ExCon, the Philippines (2023), documenta fifteen, Kassel, Germany (2022), Asia Art Archive, Hong Kong/NYC (2022, 2023), Vietnamese Women’s Museum (2022), Thai Nguyen University (2021), cyberspace (2021-2023) Website|ba-bau.org — Dinh Thao Linh Dinh Thao Linh is a Vietnam based multi/interdisciplinary artist-curator-producer who strives to create spaces of expression - whether physical, temporal, or psychological - where people from different communities are brought together. She enjoys creating spaces to foster inclusive conversations underrepresented bodies and narratives, notably about women. Her art practice has foregrounded olfaction as the core line of inquiry to explore memory tracing and care practice, as it has taken the forms of participation, soft sculpture and often suggests travels between time, spaces, and sensory experiences. Her work was exhibited in various spaces, including VIVA ExCon, Vietnamese Women’s Museum, Asia Art Archive and documenta fifteen. Kieu-Anh is the co-director of ba-bau AIR (Hanoi, 2019-) and co-founder of ba-bau collective (2021-)
